Chocolate Tilgul Laddu – A Modern Twist to a Traditional sweet

Tilgul laddus are a popular sweet in India during the festival of Makar Sankranti. This winter festival marks the day when the sun enters Makar Rashi (Capricorn), signaling longer days ahead. Traditionally, families prepare tilgul with sesame seeds, jaggery, and peanuts to share with loved ones. It is a way to spread sweetness and warmth during the cold season.
In many regions, Makar Sankranti is known by different names—Uttarayan in Gujarat, Lohri in Punjab, and Pongal in South India. Farmers celebrate this time after completing most of the hard work for the Rabi crop, making it a festival of gratitude and joy. In Maharashtra, it is customary to distribute tilgul laddus to family and friends with the saying, “Tilgul ghya, god god bola” (Take tilgul and speak sweetly).
